Introducing Finney: The Bitcoin Wallet for Families

Nunchuk is thrilled to unveil Finney — a revolutionary Bitcoin wallet designed specifically for families.

Unlike traditional solutions like Unchained, Casa, BitGo or Bitkey, which depend on third-party involvement, Finney lets your family hold the reins, ensuring complete financial autonomy and security.

With Finney, one can enlist one’s own family to hold a backup key, or backup keys, instead of relying on a trusted third-party.

I. Overview
Finney offers unparalleled flexibility to meet your family’s unique financial needs. It includes 2 wallet configurations — 2-of-3 and 3-of-5 multisig — and supports various usage scenarios, such as:

  • One Person, One Key: Equal rights and responsibilities for all.
  • Majority Owner: Central control with familial support.
  • Blind Co-Signer: Optimal privacy with selective transaction visibility.
  • Observer: Perfect for external auditors or those needing view-only access.

One Person, One Key

The simplest way to use Finney is the One Person, One Key setup: each member holds a key to the wallet.

In the 2-of-3 multisig configuration, withdrawing bitcoins requires 2 members to co-sign a transaction. If one member loses their key or becomes incapacitated, the other 2 members will still be able to access the bitcoins.

In the 3-of-5 multisig configuration, withdrawing requires 3 members to co-sign. You can lose up to 2 members or 2 keys, and still be able to access the bitcoins.

In short, the One Person, One Key setup ensures that every member has the same rights and responsibilities. No single person can withdraw bitcoins by himself/herself. Protection against the loss of keys or persons is provided by the multisig threshold.

This setup makes the most sense if the bitcoins are jointly owned by the whole family, or if one wants to ensure that access to the bitcoins is not dependent on any single individual.

Majority Owner

The second way to use Finney is the Majority Owner setup.

In this setup, one person is the primary owner of the bitcoins. As such, they possess the majority of keys required to withdraw funds.

The other members hold the remaining key(s). Multiple people can also share one key, either by having physical access to the same hardware signing device, or by each person having their own copy of the key. The other members cannot unilaterally withdraw bitcoins without the owner’s approval (signature).

This setup makes the most sense if there is a clear owner of the bitcoins, and the owner wants to leverage their family as the backup of last resort.

Blind Co-Signer

In both One Person, One Key and Majority Owner setups, all wallet members have visibility into the wallet, including the full transaction history and most up-to-date wallet balance.

The third way to use Finney is the Blind Co-Signer setup.

In this setup, the family members would not have visibility into the wallet’s transaction history and balance. They can sign transactions, but only if the owner explicitly requests them to do so. As such, their view of the wallet would be limited to only the transactions that require their signature.

This setup makes the most sense if one wants one’s family to act as the backup of the last resort, but simultaneously do not want to disclose to them how much bitcoins one owns.

*Note: Only certain types of keys are currently compatible with the Blind Co-Signer role. Namely: Tapsigner, Ledger, Trezor and Software keys.

Observer

The fourth way Finney can be used is the Observer mode.

In the Observer mode, a person can be invited to the wallet and gain full visibility of the wallet’s history and balance, but does not have any signing privileges.

The Observer mode makes the most sense if one needs to bring in an external auditor or accountant.

Nunchuk allows an unlimited number of Observers per Finney wallet. The Observer mode can be combined with other Finney setups.

II. Features

Finney is also a lot more than just a multi-user multsig wallet.

We have implemented an extensive set of features to help you and your family collaborate and manage bitcoins together in the most robust and convenient ways possible. Below are some of the top features.

Key Health Checks

An essential aspect of collaborative custody is periodically ensuring that all keys in the multisig wallet continue to remain functional. For that, we offer a comprehensive Key Health Checks system. You can health check any type of key; request co-signers to health check their keys and send health reports to the group; and soon, set up automatic reminders.

Device Support

We understand that members in a wallet might have different skill levels and personal preferences, when it comes to operating a hardware signing device.

Finney is compatible with more than 10 types of keys immediately out of the gate, so you can pick the types of keys that are most optimal for your group.

Messaging

Property 1=chat group.png

Effective collaboration requires communication. Finney includes a built-in messaging system to help you easily communicate with your family, directly inside the app.

Privacy

Privacy has always been one of the top priorities of our product, and our features over the years have reflected that mindset.

Finney inherits much of this privacy-minded system. Only emails are required to set up individual accounts. In Finney group chats, messages are configured to automatically disappear (after 1 day, 7 days or 30 days). Users also have the option of connecting to their own full nodes.

Recovery

Last but not least, we have designed Nunchuk to ensure that Nunchuk itself is never the single point of failure. We accomplished this by building on open standards and being interoperable with other wallet software on the market.

A wallet created in Nunchuk can always be recovered elsewhere, such as using Sparrow, or using published versions of our open-source applications.

III. Get Started Today

Finney opens up a plethora of opportunities for families to manage their bitcoins securely and independently. By choosing Finney, you are not just choosing a wallet; you are embracing a future where your family’s financial decisions are safeguarded within your circle of trust.
